Memorial Day has always been a special holiday for my family and me. This year again we will remember our veterans with my Dad, Max Fleischmann, Jr., a World War II veteran. It is a day to remember all of the military men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and be thankful for their honorable and selfless service.
Our world today is far different than it was when Memorial Day (or Decoration Day, as it was originally called) was first established in 1868. But we are still in awe of the armed forces’ unwavering dedication to the United States and their willingness to serve during dangerous times.
On Monday, Americans across our great land will pause at 3 p.m. to remember and honor our veterans who have died in service to our country. As I think about what Memorial Day means to me and my family, I think about the millions of Americans who have given their lives so that we can live in freedom. We pray for those who have served, are serving, and will serve our great nation.
