Congressional Oversight is Needed Now More Than Ever

The last few weeks have demonstrated the strong need for Congressional oversight. The controversies, or scandals, if you prefer, involving the Obama Administration continue to mount -- Benghazi; Fast and Furious; The IRS actions against conservative groups, the actions of the Justice Department against the Associated Press and Fox News Reporter James Rosen; and now, the actions of HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, in soliciting donations from private organizations to help implement Obamacare.

    Celebrating Flag Day

Our flag was adopted on June 14, 1777. To millions of Americans, our flag represents the goodness and patriotism of the American people. In a country that celebrates many holidays and observances, it just seems right to celebrate the birthday of our flag.

    A Message From Chuck

It's been an almost unprecedented period in Washington. The Obama Administration finds itself trying to spin three major news stories - the tapping of phone lines of the Associated Press, James Rosen of Fox News, and various members of the Fox News team, the murder of Ambassador Chris Stevens, and three other Americans, and the scandal with the IRS.

    We Remember

I hope you and your family have a happy and safe holiday weekend.

Whether you observe Memorial Day with a parade or a picnic, I hope that you take a few minutes to say a prayer and reflect on the members of our military who have given their lives for each of us.

Honor Our Military on Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day was created to honor Americans serving in the five United States military branches. In 1962 it was established as an official holiday. As I think of the men and women serving in our military, I am humbled by their commitment to country and freedom.

The President's Stubbornness is Hurting Americans

He should approve the Keystone pipeline immediately.

For purely political reasons, the Obama Administration continues to drag its feet on approving the Keystone Pipeline project. This month my Republican colleagues and I will bring to the floor legislation to expedite construction of the Keystone XL oil sands pipeline.

Wishing You and Your Family a Blessed Easter

As we gather this Sunday with family and loved ones, take time to reflect on the meaning of Easter.  Christians throughout the world celebrate this holiday as a time of hope and renewal.  We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ

In celebration of this holy period for all Christians, let's resolve to enjoy a revival of spirit and a renewed commitment that our actions will always imitate those of Jesus.  I also urge you to join me in offering special prayers for our servicemen and women and their families.

Do you support the President's efforts to restrict our Second Amendment Rights?

The President and his liberal allies are determined to move quickly on gun control legislation that will severely limit our Second Amendment rights. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California has proposed legislation that would ban virtually every sporting rifle and would have no sunset provisions.

    Celebrating Presidents Day

Today, we celebrate the birthday of George Washington -- more popularly known as "Presidents Day." This American holiday was established in 1885 in recognition of President Washington and is still officially called "Washington's Birthday" by our federal government.

On the “Top 10” Target List

This morning I got a dose of “political reality.” Less than 2 weeks after President Obama’s Inauguration, I opened the paper and read that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat Leadership are already back to playing politics and targeting Republican candidates all across the country. (You don’t have to take my word for it, the link to the Politico article is at the bottom of this note.)

Why I Introduced the "Refund Act"

As soon as we opened the 113th Congress, I introduced two bills that I believe will help our economy and immediately reduce our debt. One of these Bills is called the "REFUND Act" (Returned Exclusively for Unpaid National Debt Act).

Fleischmann votes for ‘No Budget, No Pay’; Corker co-sponsors

    Oak Ridge Today:

U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann voted for a bill that passed the House on Wednesday that temporarily increases the nation’s debt ceiling and requires each house of Congress to pass a budget.

Known as the “No Budget, No Pay” Act, the bill would withhold pay for legislative members if they fail to pass a budget.

“Not having a budget wouldn’t fly for hardworking Americans at home or at work, and it shouldn’t be allowed in Congress,” said Fleischmann, a Tennessee Republican whose district includes Oak Ridge. “We cannot ever truly constrain spending if the Senate will not pass a budget. With the passage of this bill, the Senate Democrats will finally be obligated to produce a path to get our fiscal house in order.”

Fleischmann said the House has passed “responsible budgets” each year he has been in Congress, but it’s been more than 1,300 days since the Senate, controlled by Democrats, has produced a budget.

“This irresponsible pattern must end this year,” Fleischmann said.

Why I Believe in the Second Amendment

On December 17, 1791, the Second Amendment was ratified as part of the “Bill of Rights.” The text is very brief: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Chuck Fleischmann gets key U.S. House subcommittee spot

    Chattanooga Times Free Press:

U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann has landed a spot on a crucial panel for Tennessee's 3rd District.

The second-term Republican, whose district includes Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Tennessee Valley Authority, was appointed to the House Appropriations Committee's Energy & Water Development Subcommittee.

The news was announced Tuesday after the Ooltewah Republican expressed interest in joining the subcommittee, which oversees funding for the U.S. Department of Energy -- the federal agency that operates Oak Ridge.

Energy & Water also handles TVA issues. Outside observers have said Fleischmann's new assignment could lead to speedier work at TVA's Chickamauga Lock project, which remains in a state of gridlock.

Fleischmann also will serve on appropriations subcommittees dealing with homeland security and labor, health and human services, according to a committee news release.

    Starting 2013 The Right Way

The new year brings new resolutions and fresh starts and that’s exactly what we need in Washington.  It’s time we see the end to partisan politics and find a way to work together to solve the critical issues facing or nation.  There is simply too much at stake.  And the American people deserve better than they’ve been getting.

We can solve our problems if we work together.  As you are well aware, our great nation faces some very serious problems.  Sustained high unemployment over the last 4 years is the most critical, so I will continue to make creating jobs be my number 1 priority.

But we must also find a way to stop the reckless spending of taxpayer money and get our deficit under control.  The fact that federal spending was 23 percent of gross domestic product in 2012 is not only unacceptable, it’s downright dangerous!  The vast majority of my colleagues in the House agree and we simply must make the hard decisions now and find a way to get this under control.

Equally alarming is the fact that our national debt now exceeds $16 trillion.  We owe more on the national debt than the entire U.S. economy produced in goods and services in all of 2012.  Obviously, we can’t continue to kick the can down the road.  We owe it to children and grandchildren to solve these problems now.  With your support and continued active involvement I know we can be successful.  I look forward to working with you over the coming year.

Rep. Chuck Fleischmann supports pro-life bill

    Nooga.Com

If a new piece of pro-life legislation gains any traction in the House of Representatives this year, it will have the backing of Rep. Chuck Fleischmann.

Fleischmann announced Friday he has signed on as a co-sponsor of the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, a bill recently introduced by his Tennessee colleague, Rep. Diane Black. The measure, which currently has 22 co-sponsors in the House, would ensure that Title X grants offered to family-planning organizations would be prohibited from going to organizations that also provide abortions, such as Planned Parenthood.

In a phone interview, Fleischmann said he was "proud" to sign on to the bill and touted his staunch pro-life record since being elected to Congress.

"I was proud to sign on to this," Fleischmann said. "My belief is that human life is sacred and begins at conception and that it needs to be protected. The rights of the unborn need to be protected like those of the born, and I don't think that taxpayer money ought to be used to facilitate abortions in any way."

The bill is not the first item of pro-life legislation the congressman has supported since taking office in 2011. During his first term, Fleischmann co-sponsored seven pro-life bills, including the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which would have prohibited any federal funds being appropriated for abortions.

Fleischmann said that, despite being legal, he still saw the issue of a woman's right to decide to terminate a pregnancy as worthy of re-examining.

"I understand this is a very sensitive issue and that it's very serious," he said. "But throughout history in America, the status quo has been challenged when it's been wrong before. To make gains in civil rights, to have abolished slavery—the rights of the unborn need to be addressed and advocated for the same way. And I think the upholding of Roe v. Wade is unjust, and we should address it."

May the good times of the past year live on in our memories and may we learn lessons from the sad times.  My family and I hope that each of us will be stronger and better than ever in the coming year.
